Orange County Students Win State And National
Awards In The
1997 International Aviation Art Contest
Orange County students win nine of the the ten awards given at the state level and two of three first place awards given at the national level in the 1997 International Aviation Art Contest.
This is the second consecutive year that winners of the John Wayne Airport Student Art Contest participated and placed in the International Aviation Art Contest. Thousands of school children from across the United States submitted artwork for this contest sponsored by the Federation Aeronautique Internationale and co-sponsored at the state levels by the National Association of State Aviation Officials, the National Aeronautics Association and the Federal Aviation Administration.
Children in three age groups, 6-9, 10-13, and 14-17, were invited to submit artwork depicting their own aviation/space themed postage stamp for the imaginary county, Aeromania. Winners were judged on the basis of creativity, technical ability and appropriateness to the theme of the art contest.
Winners in the state competition are Susanna Yang, age 6 from Garden Grove; Alicia Bremmer, 7, Garden Grove; Madeleine Fierro, 8, Lake Forest; Diane Lee, 9, La Palma; Sean Wu, 13, Irvine; Michael Tseng, 10, Irvine; Leslie Nunez, 14, Anaheim; Stephen Laburn, 16, Anaheim; and George Tseheridis, 16, Anaheim Hills.
First place winners from the national competition are Sean Wu and Leslie Nunez. Both winners have been invited to participate in the National Aeronautic Association's Annual Award Banquet in April 28, 1997 at 7:30 p.m. in the Air and Space Museum in Washington D.C. Their artwork will be forwarded to Switzerland to compete in the International competition on June 4-6, 1997.
The Orange County Board of Supervisors will honor the winners, their parents and their teachers at the May 6th Board meeting at 9:30 a.m. in the Hall of Administration, 10 Civic Center Plaza, Santa Ana CA.
